The Cyclical Skincare Routine

If you keep track of your skin through the month you are likely to discover a lot of changes. This is true for both men and women because both go through hormonal cycles. To avoid confusion I am going to use myself as the example in this post since my cycle is pretty much consistent and predictable. (Not sure what your cycle is? There are a ton of apps for that!)

I have pretty normal skin. Under normal circumstances, it isn’t overly oily or dry. That, however, changes the week before my period. Suddenly I have oilier skin and feel like my skin forgot I am no longer a teenager. I have to change my skin care habits to prevent breakouts and looking like I need to wash my face.
This change is because sebum production is in excess around this time of my cycle. By the time my period hits, my skin is sensitive and prone to dry patches. Fun times.
Because of these changes, I benefit from cyclical skincare and I bet you could too!

So what is cyclical skin care? Simply put, it is changing the skin care products you used based on the needs of your skin throughout your regular hormonal cycle. We have 3 main hormones: oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. As the levels of each fluctuate they influence our bodies; weight, sleep, skin, moods, etc. We adapt based on our needs (more sleep, change in diet, etc). It make sense to also change skin care regimes.

By tailoring my morning and nighttime routines based on my hormone cycle, I am able to avoid breakouts, sensitivity, and dry patches from hormone fluctuations. Tuning into my cycle has changed how I do my skincare. Being aware of my skin has kept my 41-year-old self looking more youthful, healthy, and clear. This is what my cyclical skin care looks like.

Beginning of cycle (right after the end of your period) use products with vitamin C.  These products provide your skin with antioxidants and help boost your skin’s radiance.
I recommend Bright Young Thang, Nothing Phases Me, and Serves You Bright in the mornings. I also recommend a good facial sunscreen. Try the lightweight Block It Like It’s Hot.
This is also a great time to focus on preventative care, including a good facial sunscreen.
I recommend the using the Never Grow Up Serum and Creme or the Defiant set for anti-aging at night-time.
Face masks are a great way to incorporate added pampering into your regime. It is best to use face masks 2-3 times a week.
For this part of the cycle I recommend Hot & Gold which is a brightening face mask and has colloidal gold, caffeine, and Peridot; all are fabulous for firming, restoring and toning skin.

By week 3 & 4 is when skin changes and you are going to notice the annoying things like acne.
I recommend switching your face wash to Right Back at Ya, tone with Well Adjusted, and moisturize with Under Control (day) and Impress Me (night).
The face masks I recommend for these weeks are Ice Queen (week 3) and Envy This (week 4).

The Perfect Skincare Routine For Morning & Night

Skin care can be so confusing. Cleansers, toners, serums, creams, primers, masks, and more! Where do you start, what do you need, and does order matter?

51824013_10218851831193032_5383866897106206720_n

To start, yes, order matters. For a product to be effective, you need to follow a sequence that does not negate the previous products benefits.
You wouldn’t put your moisturizer on and then wash your face, right?

Another thing to think about, time of day plays a role in your skin care needs! That’s right! Your morning skin and night skin have different needs to be met which means different skin care. Oh geeze!

Don’t stress! We are here to help simplify things for you! Team Poshtopia is trained to provide you with personalized Pampered Readings. Each reading is catered specifically for you! We have a basic guideline we follow, but we mix things up as necessary so you are getting exactly what your skin needs without too much fuss and (hopefully) zero confusion!

Right now, I am here to help figure out basic routine …

MORNING SKINCARE:
Your main focus is hydration and protecting your skin from whatever elements your skin will come in contact with.
We all know the sun and outdoor pollution are bad for your skin, but indoor pollution is too, so we need to make sure you are sufficiently protected.

1) CLEANSER
Your skin comes in contact with pollutants while you are sleeping and our pillowcases harbor dust and bacteria. Add in sweat and drool and your face is in serious need of love come morning.
If you are just getting started, Right Back at Ya Two-in-One Cleansing Clay Face Wash and Mask is ideal for resetting both oily and dry skin!

2) TONER
Toner helps reset your skin back to its most basic healthy state. It is a great prep for your morning skin care routine. Well Adjusted Face Toner has glycolic acid that gently chemically exfoliates dull skin layers. Lentil extract reduces the appearance of pores and beta-glucan adds needed moisture to keep your skin balanced.

3) SERUM
Using a serum with vitamin C is extremely important. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that will protect your skin against UV rays, brighten your skin, and support collagen production to help slow down the signs of again. You also want hydration via hyaluronic acid, lipids, and/or ceramides. These all protect your skin from weather-related dryness and the extra hydration will plump and smooth your skin. Perfectly Posh offers several serums that provide both vitamin C and hydration in 1 easy step. For younger skin I often suggest Never Grow Up Serum and for more mature skin I suggest Nothing Phases Me Serum.

4) Eye Serum
Impish Eyes instantly perks up tired skin and lessens dark under-eye circles with caffeine, cucumber, and CoQ10 serum.
We also have Cheat Sheets Under Eye Sheet Masks, and under eye mask for that extra dose of pampering. I really like to use these after watching a tear-jerker movie or during or after a flight.

5) MOISTURIZE
Once your serums and eye care are fully absorbed, follow with a moisturizer. Perfectly Posh offers several that are targeted for specific skin types. Be sure to contact me for a personalized Pampered Reading and I will help you find the right fit! In a rush? Moisturize 911 Face Crème is always a safe bet; a lightweight, aloe-based, caffeinated face crème that rescues tired looking skin.

6) SPF
You should always finish your routine with SPF. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, you need to protect your skin from UV Rays! Block It Like It’s Hot Face Creme is our lightweight SPF 30 face crème with blood orange and hibiscus to guard against sun damage.

EVENING SKINCARE:
Your main focus in the evening is repairing and rejuvenating your skin. Night is when your focus is on addressing your personal skin care issues.

1) CLEANSER
Make sure you are washing your face at night! Ridding your skin of dirt, pollution, and makeup will help your skin stay healthier and younger looking longer.

2) MICELLAR TONIC (optional)
If you wear heavy makeup, it is advised you give your face an extra wipe with a makeup remover after you wash your face. You may be surprised that your clean face isn’t quite as clean as you thought!
A Micellar Tonic, like Bare It All, is ideal because not only does it grab the deep down grim like a magnet, but it provides a boost of extra hydration. Natural ingredients like coconut water, prickly pear, apple, and radish root will leave your skin refreshed.

3) SERUM
When targeting skin care concerns at night make sure you have the right serum. Defiant Naked Youth Serum is excellent for aging skin and Impress Me Probiotic Pressed Serum is perfectly soothing for sensitive and irritated skin.

4) EYE CREME
For targeted eye care, Perfectly Posh offers 2 eye cremes. Defiant Uplifting Eye Creme is an age-defying eye crème that helps diminish puffiness, dark circle, and crows feet around the eyes.
Prize on the Eyes Eye Crème is a gentle, but decadent eye crème that soothes the delicate skin around your eyes.

5) MOISTURIZE
At night, if needed, you can use a moisturizer that’s richer than what you would typically use in the morning. All I’ve Avo Wanted is an intensely nourishing face mask with avocado oil that you can wear overnight! If you don’t need a heavier moisturizer, use the same moisturizer you use in the morning.

Pampered Readings

Last week I introduced the new Perfectly Posh 2019 Core catalog and I mentioned the focus of it is very different from past themes. We are diving deeper into skin types and which products best benefit specific skin scenarios. Basically, we are getting into very personalized pampering! We are calling this Pampered Readings.

No worries, this isn’t predicting the future or reading Tarot cards or anything like that.
Pampered Readings are an improved and simplified way for Posh consultants to help customers find the correct skin care items for their needs.

How does it work? You will be presented with cards (or pictures of the cards if you are online). Pick 2 cards that you feel best describe your skin care needs.
We now have a baseline of products to help guide us as we create the perfect skincare regime specifically for YOU! How cool is that? A personalized skincare consultation for free!

Below is a quick glance at our new Papered Reading cards!

Bath, Self-Care Habits

Let Them Take Baths!

In honor of National Bath Week I want to share a few simple tips on how to take your bath to the next level!

*Disclaimer:
You do not need a beautiful big tub to get the relaxing benefits of a bath. I have a very normal-sized tub (AKA way too small & I barely fit in it), but I still enjoy frequent baths as part of my quiet me-time (AKA those times I pretend my children aren’t barging in with my husband wrangling them away so I have a few moments to just breathe).

49696310_10218636058638853_7301475614727340032_n

FIRST UP, AMBIANCE!
Low lights, candles, music … Or maybe you prefer complete silence. Either way, it sounds peaceful and spa-like right?

And do not forget a drink! Whether it is a simple glass of water or something a little more fun (champagne maybe?) Having something to sip helps make bath time a bit more fun and is actually practical!

Warm baths can make you parched and hot baths can dehydrate you (and your skin! Best to keep it warm). Sipping water will help counter that. Add some flare to your water by adding berries, mint, or sliced cucumbers!
Want something fancier? Red wine is a great option because the humidity from your bath helps the flavor profile open up!

DON’T FORGET THE BUBBLES!
I love adding bubbles to my bath! Unfortunately many brands are loaded with chemicals, sulfates, and other not-so natural ingredients that can dry and irritate skin.
You want to use a sulfate-free option like Perfectly Posh’s Bubble Up™!
For a luxurious bubble bath add a scoop of Bubble Up™ for a super foamy bath! It is loaded with sunflower oil to soften skin and sea salt which helps soothe and soften skin!
Did I mention it is vegan?

fizi styled

BATH BOMBS ARE WHERE IT IS AT!
Fizi Bath Bombs are sulfate-free and loaded with amazing ingredients including moisturizing Shea butter and magnesium-rich salt from the Great Salt Lake to soften skin. They are scented with essential oils and are truly a decadent addition to any bath without breaking the bank!
*check under the seasonal tab for seasonal scents or contact your consultant for more Fizi options!

TRIED & TRUE BATH SALTS!
All Mixd Up™ Bath Salts are loaded with essential oils that benefit your skin!

Sleepy Sleep™ has calming lavender essential oil to relieve tension, help you unwind, and even skin tone.
Cold on Hold™ soothes & refreshes with eucalyptus, peppermint, & rosemary essential oils.
Muscle Through™/muscle-through/AE1002.html?cgid=all-mixd-up with rosemary has an Epsom salt base to relieve tension and help you relax; ideal for a post-workout soak!

You can also try adding out new Cann I Be CBD Essential Oil to moisturize and calm stressed out skin!

49428961_10218636058838858_1761637521432772608_n

DON’T FORGET YOUR MASKS & SCRUBS!
A bath is the perfect time to pamper from head to toe! Use a fabulous body scrub, such as Beach Blanket, or polish, like You Apricaught Me, to help slosh of dead, dry skin and will leave your skin soft and glowing!

Don’t forget a moisturizing face mask! Steam from the bath opens pores which will allow your mask to work better and deeper! Avoid masks that are more intense and require less time (like Cackle Spackle) and avoid sheet masks (including Cheat Sheets) since they tend to slip off from the humidity. There is a time and a place for these awesome masks, but the bath isn’t one of them!
Instead, try All I’ve Avo Wanted™ Nourishing, Hydrating Face Mask or Hot and Gold Anti-aging, Firming Face Mask with colloidal gold!

All these together put together takes your average me-time and makes it a pampering art form!

Self-Care Habits

4 Self-Care Resolutions You Can Keep!

today is the day

I am absolutely brilliant at making fabulous and impressive life-improving New Year’s resolutions.  I am also absolutely brilliant at failing to do them beyond 1-2 weeks. That’s right, I don’t even make it until February 1.

I like to blame my busy life; hubby, 3 animals, 5 kids (2 of whom are home-schooled), therapy sessions for the kiddo with autism, school events, after school activities/sports, church, Bible study, housework … The list goes on.
However, if I am honest with myself I have never been great at committing to huge changes in habit, because that is essentially what a New Year’s resolution is; changing habits in a big way.

I am here to offer 4 simple changes that you can easily implement. If you are anything like me then I highly recommend tackling 1 at a time and making it a goal to achieve all 5 by the end of the year. This is far less discouraging than tackling all 5 at once and failing because you are overwhelmed.

*****

1) Be Intentionally Kind to Someone
This sounds obvious, but it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. Everyday make a conscious effort to smile at someone, hold the door, buy someone a coffee, ask your co-worker how things are and actually listen to their answer without rushing off, or whatever else you can think of! This will boost you day and the recipients day!

2) Take a Long Walk Once a Week Outside
30-60-minutes outside will clear your mind and help get some exercise in! It is very refreshing! You don’t have to get fancy. I just stroll along my neighborhood. This is also a great way to meet neighbors.

49204496_10218590928550629_5535679980836487168_o

3) Once a Day Turn Your Phone, Tablet, Computer Off For an Hour
Spend time without texts, emails, and social media to distract you. You will feel refreshed and you will be amazed what you can accomplish in that hour. For example, reading that book you have been meaning to for the last 2 years!

*Personal note: When I started to consciously turn my phone off in the evening, I found myself more calm and less unreasonably angry and snappy.

4) Create Morning & Nighttime Routines
This life change will be the biggest effort, but it is doable and worth it.

Take a moment and think about what you can do every morning to start your day off positive.
For me, I get up and shower while the kids are all still sleeping. Being able to get ready in the quiet and peace helps me to wake up slowly and not feel rushed. This is important to me. Does this mean I have to get up 30 minutes sooner? Yes, but it is well worth it if it means I am less crabby.
Other ways to start you day off right: meditate, yoga, read, do a devotional, sip your coffee in the quiet …

Now I want you to think about how you can make bedtime more restful for you. I suffer from massive insomnia. I have found that having a nighttime routine helps decrease my time tossing and turning. I am also more likely to sleep longer stretches before waking up.
A routine also helps my children develop healthy habits. The goal is for all of us to be less stressed and better rested.

Need some ideas? How about dimming the lights, turning off the tv, drinking a cup of herbal tea. Maybe you are into aromatherapy . There are plenty of scents meant to calm and promote relaxation. Meditation is another great option. Really there is no wrong answer. Just find a routine that benefits YOU and stick with it!
