To Tone or Not to Tone … Using a Toner In Your Skincare Routine

The skincare mantra is “cleanse, tone, moisturize.”
It is drilled into our heads. One question I get a lot is “Do I really need a toner?”
That is quickly followed up with “What is the point of a toner?”
I am here to (hopefully) answer those questions for you!

  • Toners balance your skin’s pH. Skin is naturally acidic, but it can get all messed up from a variety of factors. This results in your skin working overtime to return to normal levels. A toner helps restore the balance quickly.
  • Toners can act as an exfoliant and remove dead skin cells, excess oil, dirt, makeup, and even cleanser residue. This can result in the appearance of smaller pores.
  • Toners add a layer of protection. They help close pores after cleansing. This helps reduces impurities and environmental toxins from getting into your skin.
  • Toners can add moisture and bind to your skin.
  • Toners that contain glycolic acid or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs!

Here is the kicker though. Not all toners are created equal. Some are extremely drying because they are high in alcohol. Alcohol aggressively strips your skin and should be avoided.

The right toner will give your skin a bit more pick-me and leave you glowing!
When you use toner and then apply serums or makeup you get better and smoother coverage!

Simple On-The-Go Skin Care For Moms (and everyone else too)!

When I gave birth to my first child I tried to maintain the skin care routine I always had. I mostly succeeded, but then I got pregnant with Baby #2. The Perfect Skincare Routine For Morning & Night

Skin care can be so confusing. Cleansers, toners, serums, creams, primers, masks, and more! Where do you start, what do you need, and does order matter?

To start, yes, order matters. For a product to be effective, you need to follow a sequence that does not negate the previous products benefits.
You wouldn’t put your moisturizer on and then wash your face, right?

Another thing to think about, time of day plays a role in your skin care needs! That’s right! Your morning skin and night skin have different needs to be met which means different skin care. Oh geeze!

Don’t stress! We are here to help simplify things for you! Team Poshtopia is trained to provide you with personalized Pampered Readings. Each reading is catered specifically for you! MORNING SKINCARE:
Your main focus is hydration and protecting your skin from whatever elements your skin will come in contact with.
We all know the sun and outdoor pollution are bad for your skin, but indoor pollution is too, so we need to make sure you are sufficiently protected.

1) CLEANSER
Your skin comes in contact with pollutants while you are sleeping and our pillowcases harbor dust and bacteria. Add in sweat and drool and your face is in serious need of love come morning.
If you are just getting started, Right Back at Ya Two-in-One Cleansing Clay Face Wash and Mask is ideal for resetting both oily and dry skin!

2) TONER
Toner helps reset your skin back to its most basic healthy state. It is a great prep for your morning skin care routine. Well Adjusted Face Toner has glycolic acid that gently chemically exfoliates dull skin layers. 3) SERUM
Using a serum with vitamin C is extremely important. EVENING SKINCARE:

Make sure you are washing your face at night! Ridding your skin of dirt, pollution, and makeup will help your skin stay healthier and younger looking longer.

If you wear heavy makeup, it is advised you give your face an extra wipe with a makeup remover after you wash your face. You may be surprised that your clean face isn’t quite as clean as you thought!

Let Them Take Baths!

In honor of National Bath Week I want to share a few simple tips on how to take your bath to the next level!

*Disclaimer:
You do not need a beautiful big tub to get the relaxing benefits of a bath. I have a very normal-sized tub (AKA way too small & I barely fit in it), but I still enjoy frequent baths as part of my quiet me-time (AKA those times I pretend my children aren’t barging in with my husband wrangling them away so I have a few moments to just breathe).

FIRST UP, AMBIANCE!
Low lights, candles, music … Or maybe you prefer complete silence. Either way, it sounds peaceful and spa-like right?

And do not forget a drink! Whether it is a simple glass of water or something a little more fun (champagne maybe?) Having something to sip helps make bath time a bit more fun and is actually practical!

Warm baths can make you parched and hot baths can dehydrate you (and your skin! Best to keep it warm). Sipping water will help counter that. Add some flare to your water by adding berries, mint, or sliced cucumbers!
Want something fancier? Red wine is a great option because the humidity from your bath helps the flavor profile open up!

DON’T FORGET THE BUBBLES! 
I love adding bubbles to my bath! Unfortunately many brands are loaded with chemicals, sulfates, and other not-so natural ingredients that can dry and irritate skin.

4 Self-Care Resolutions You Can Keep!

I am absolutely brilliant at making fabulous and impressive life-improving New Year’s resolutions.  I am also absolutely brilliant at failing to do them beyond 1-2 weeks. That’s right, I don’t even make it until February 1.

I like to blame my busy life; hubby, 3 animals, 5 kids (2 of whom are home-schooled), therapy sessions for the kiddo with autism, school events, after school activities/sports, church, Bible study, housework … The list goes on.
However, if I am honest with myself I have never been great at committing to huge changes in habit, because that is essentially what a New Year’s resolution is; changing habits in a big way.

I am here to offer 4 simple changes that you can easily implement. If you are anything like me then I highly recommend tackling 1 at a time and making it a goal to achieve all 5 by the end of the year. This is far less discouraging than tackling all 5 at once and failing because you are overwhelmed.

1) Be Intentionally Kind to Someone
This sounds obvious, but it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. Everyday make a conscious effort to smile at someone, hold the door, buy someone a coffee, ask your co-worker how things are and actually listen to their answer without rushing off, or whatever else you can think of! This will boost you day and the recipients day!

2) Take a Long Walk Once a Week Outside
30-60-minutes outside will clear your mind and help get some exercise in! It is very refreshing! You don’t have to get fancy. I just stroll along my neighborhood. This is also a great way to meet neighbors.

3) Once a Day Turn Your Phone, Tablet, Computer Off For an Hour
Spend time without texts, emails, and social media to distract you. You will feel refreshed and you will be amazed what you can accomplish in that hour. For example, reading that book you have been meaning to for the last 2 years!

*Personal note: When I started to consciously turn my phone off in the evening, I found myself more calm and less unreasonably angry and snappy.

4) Create Morning & Nighttime Routines
This life change will be the biggest effort, but it is doable and worth it.

Take a moment and think about what you can do every morning to start your day off positive.
For me, I get up and shower while the kids are all still sleeping. Being able to get ready in the quiet and peace helps me to wake up slowly and not feel rushed. This is important to me. Does this mean I have to get up 30 minutes sooner? Yes, but it is well worth it if it means I am less crabby.
Other ways to start you day off right: meditate, yoga, read, do a devotional, sip your coffee in the quiet …

Now I want you to think about how you can make bedtime more restful for you. I suffer from massive insomnia. I have found that having a nighttime routine helps decrease my time tossing and turning. I am also more likely to sleep longer stretches before waking up.
A routine also helps my children develop healthy habits. The goal is for all of us to be less stressed and better rested.

Need some ideas? How about dimming the lights, turning off the tv, drinking a cup of herbal tea. Maybe you are into aromatherapy . There are plenty of scents meant to calm and promote relaxation. Meditation is another great option. Really there is no wrong answer. Just find a routine that benefits YOU and stick with it!
