If you keep track of your skin through the month you are likely to discover a lot of changes. This is true for both men and women because both go through hormonal cycles. To avoid confusion I am going to use myself as the example in this post since my cycle is pretty much consistent and predictable. (Not sure what your cycle is? There are a ton of apps for that!)
I have pretty normal skin. Under normal circumstances, it isn’t overly oily or dry. That, however, changes the week before my period. Suddenly I have oilier skin and feel like my skin forgot I am no longer a teenager. I have to change my skin care habits to prevent breakouts and looking like I need to wash my face.
This change is because sebum production is in excess around this time of my cycle. By the time my period hits, my skin is sensitive and prone to dry patches. Fun times.
Because of these changes, I benefit from cyclical skincare and I bet you could too!
So what is cyclical skin care? Simply put, it is changing the skin care products you used based on the needs of your skin throughout your regular hormonal cycle. We have 3 main hormones: oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. As the levels of each fluctuate they influence our bodies; weight, sleep, skin, moods, etc. We adapt based on our needs (more sleep, change in diet, etc). It make sense to also change skin care regimes.
By tailoring my morning and nighttime routines based on my hormone cycle, I am able to avoid breakouts, sensitivity, and dry patches from hormone fluctuations. Tuning into my cycle has changed how I do my skincare. Being aware of my skin has kept my 41-year-old self looking more youthful, healthy, and clear. This is what my cyclical skin care looks like.
Beginning of cycle (right after the end of your period) use products with vitamin C. These products provide your skin with antioxidants and help boost your skin’s radiance.
I recommend Bright Young Thang, Nothing Phases Me, and Serves You Bright in the mornings. I also recommend a good facial sunscreen. Try the lightweight Block It Like It’s Hot.
This is also a great time to focus on preventative care, including a good facial sunscreen.
I recommend the using the Never Grow Up Serum and Creme or the Defiant set for anti-aging at night-time.
Face masks are a great way to incorporate added pampering into your regime. It is best to use face masks 2-3 times a week.
For this part of the cycle I recommend Hot & Gold which is a brightening face mask and has colloidal gold, caffeine, and Peridot; all are fabulous for firming, restoring and toning skin.
By week 3 & 4 is when skin changes and you are going to notice the annoying things like acne.
I recommend switching your face wash to Right Back at Ya, tone with Well Adjusted, and moisturize with Under Control (day) and Impress Me (night).
The face masks I recommend for these weeks are Ice Queen (week 3) and Envy This (week 4).
